Summary
At Umetarou Nozaki’s home, he praises an enthusiastic Hirotaka Wakamatsu’s good work on the screen tones. After Nozaki shares his own experiences with the knife, Wakamatsu thinks that he should also look for his own knife. However, since he is not concentrating on the basketball game, Yuzuki Seo easily steals the ball from him. When his teammates ask him why he was so distracted, he cheerfully states that he was thinking about buying an X-ACTO knife. Completely misunderstanding, they desperately think about what they can do to stop him.
On the way home, Wakamatsu tells Nozaki that for some reason, his teammates begged him not to buy a knife. Nevertheless, he adds that he loves tone work, and lately, he has begun to see everything in tones. However, no matter how good he is at applying them, he sometimes mixes up the numbers of each specific tone. Therefore, he tells Nozaki that he has come up with nicknames for each one. Furthermore, Nozaki responds by accepting Wakamatsu’s name changes, and with startling regularity, begins using the new names. This, however, causes Wakamatsu even more stress.
The next day in school, Nozaki tells Chiyo Sakura about the new tone name technique; he adds that he has also named one “Sakura.” She wonders which one it is. However, when she sees the polka dot tone, she is furious at a surprised Nozaki.
The basketball team members tell Seo that Wakamatsu has been thinking about buying a knife. In order to protect him, they accompany her to pick out one. When they find a “safe” one, she gives it to Wakamatsu. Overjoyed, he immediately names a screen tone after seeing this new side of her. Later at Nozaki’s house, he uses his new knife to work. Although he decides to use it with care, the knife immediately slips out of his hand and sticks into his thigh, just as it had already happened with Nozaki.
